IN THE BEGINNING

Back in 1990, Starflight Aviation, in its capacity as official air carrier to the Music Therapy Trust, was exclusively responsible for flying an estimated $1 billion worth of rock superstars into and out of the Knebworth ‘90 concert. Tears for Fears, Genesis, Status Quo, Robert Plant, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd all shared the same bill in what was the most spectacular array of all-British talent ever to assemble for a single show.

On the day Starflight carried out 250 movements using a fleet of 15 helicopters, operating to a timetable that had been precisely calculated down to the very last second. With many other VIP's also being flown in, the sheer volume of traffic led to a second temporary 'feeder' airfield being constructed near Hemel Hempstead. It was the first time that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had licensed a temporary airfield primarily for night flying.

The CAA officially complimented Starflight on the high standard of professionalism with which everything had been organised and completed. Standards we continue to meet and exceed today. Knebworth ‘90 was just the very start of great things to come, and Starflight has proudly continued to fly the worlds of music, film, sport, corporate, government and entertainment to destinations both near and far.

OUR CARBON PROGRAMME

Starflight recognises the environmental impact of business aviation and the necessity to address climate change. While private jet and helicopter travel is a vital service offering unparalleled convenience, we also understand the responsibility that comes with it. Starflight is therefore proud to offer our clients the opportunity to opt in to two carbon reduction programmes.

Pioneering Partnership with Cool Earth

Starflight first partnered with the Cool Earth charity in 2009. Cool Earth’s approach to carbon sequestration is unique, focusing on supporting the indigenous groups living in the rainforest. Identifying that the economic fragility of these groups makes it possible for loggers to purchase the land on which they live, Cool Earth aims to support the indigenous people to establish profitable agricultural productions and onward supply chains. Starflight’s funding has helped Cool Earth and the Peruvian Asháninka to protect over 10,000 acres of Amazon rainforest.

2021 saw Starflight and Cool Earth launch our Planet Positive Programme expanding our reach across the globe. In the 14 years since we began our partnership, Starflight and its clients have now contributed £600,000 to Cool Earth’s projects. This substantial support helped and continues to fund the implementation and management of 56 locally-led projects across the Amazon Basin, Congo Basin, and New Guinea rainforest, and the results are clear. Forest loss rates in Cool Earth’s Amazon partnerships are now 36% lower than in non-managed areas. In Papua New Guinea, the reduction is an impressive 56% and in Congo, it stands at 31% lower than provincial rates.

Starflight will continue to support Cool Earth’s projects which now protect over 290,000 hectares of tropical rainforest around the world, which itself is a store of over 240 million tonnes of carbon.

Unlocking Official Offsets with 4Air

While the efforts of Cool Earth undeniably contributes to the prosperity of indigenous groups and the maintenance of the rainforest they live in, Starflight recognises that a growing number of clients are seeking a quantifiable accredited carbon offset.

Following the launch of our carbon offset solution in 2021 with MyClimate, Starflight are taking a new direction with a collaboration with 4AIR. Starflight now offer our clients the ability to offset the carbon emissions from their flights specific to the aircraft type used, and at competitive market rates. Carbon offsetting has now become not just an option, but a financially viable choice for our clients enabling verifiable, ethical, sustainable flying.

With Cool Earth taking a human-lead approach to sustainability, the carbon credits purchased through Starflight and 4AIR will contribute to technology driven renewable energy projects worldwide such as the Usak Wind Farm in Turkey. With 36 wind turbines generating 54 MW of renewable electricity, our opt-in clients will contribute to the development of a clean energy alternative.
